I’m not her, but I could be for this short while
So keep me up all night.
Promises, promises
You said you you’d keep them all
But I know different ‘cos I was one of them
Don’t look at me the way you look at her
Why do you waste those charming words?
Why must you always prove me right?
Promises, promises
Words you imposed on me
I knew I’d break them, now I’m breaking you
Don’t look at me through those romantic eyes

Regarding

No noise, except an involuntary gasp
Of horror at where we're placing fingertips
You call me by my name
It sounds so strange, I don't complain
Blinded by the darkness and the gin.
This is not normal pillow talk
Our pretences
I lie through my teeth but you can't hold your tongue
Tip-toe across landings outside the room
Creep down creaky stairways
Not wanting to face the reality, this shouldn't be
Tomorrow we shall not speak of this again.
This is our mistake
This secret's out.

I know that it's too late
And I shouldn't be sitting here by the phone
I know I made a mistake
And I shouldn't have said those three little words at all
You're sat at home
Listening to old pop songs all alone
Up in your room where I'll never go again
Since you said to me 'we're no more than friends'
I know that it's too late
And things will never be like before
You were my closest friend
Now I can't look you in the eye again
Sorry sadly we're no more than friends.

Work & Romance
04:21

Mousey brown hair pinned back from her face
She has an old Ikea pencil tucked behind her ear
Trying to find the balance between strict and friendly
The only manner to behave
She’s sworn to silence unless you have a question
And she’s got all the answers when she opens her pursed lips
Peering over glasses but not looking down her nose
At unruly children.
And when she opens the page
The monotony fades away
Amongst the bookstands, dusting off the shelves
Collecting books that she plans to read but never will
In amongst the Classics, Histories and the Thrillers
She finds the one she’s looking for
She can’t remember the last time that she felt as alive
As she feels with her heart in a book
Trying to find the balance between work and romance,
She gets the two mixed up
And when she opens the page
The monotony fades away
She’s lost in the pages
It’s got to the stage where it’s gone too far..

Zooey

I’ve seen all your films
I know that you’re trained to act that way
But I can’t detach myself when I see you kissing somebody else
Theatrical types
Bet it came so easily to you
Suspiciously cool; the definition of pretentious pop culture
I’m getting doughy over Zooey
She makes boys act so strange
Though her movies aren’t too great
I still watch them all again and again
You sing in a band
She and Him, Volumes One and Two
I lie awake reading the words, pretending that you wrote them for me and you
I copied the songs
Not prepared to buy them on CD
I listened to them one by one, I can’t deny the appeal is lost on me
I tried to write you a love letter
Wrote it down in size 12 Arial font
Return to sender, all the others the same
‘Cos Zooey I can never spell your name
